greater prairie chicken print |original hand-printed relief print
all profits from this print will go to the wisconsin prairie chicken project, a small organization dedicated to the conservation effort focused on protecting and restoring critical habitats for the endangered greater prairie chicken in wisconsin. These birds are a native grouse species to wisconsin, which commonly inhabited prairies and savannas in the southern and western portions of the state shortly after european settlement in the mid-1800s. due to a mix of factors including intensive agriculture, forest succession, timber harvesting, and fire suppression, the greater prairie chicken went from inhabiting almost every county in the state to being restricted to a small range in central wisconsin by the mid 1900s.
